Lila's Brilliant Opinions
About these opinions
I listen to a lot of music, and I think about it a lot. I was lovingly gifted this obsession by my father from the moment I was born. He raised me on all types of music, from Joni Mitchell to Zero 7 to Fela Kuti. I grew up on handpicked playlists and song recommendations, and at some point I started making my own. This soon translated into curiosity about what I was hearing. I began a path of many years spent on Wikipedia, telling anyone who would listen about the connections and stories that formed not just in the music itself but behind the scenes in its creation. I became somewhat of an amateur investigative journalist, determined to get to the bottom of why a line meant what it meant or how those producers knew that artist or what inspired that album.
In July 2023, I got to be part of a class with the New York Times that properly introduced me to music journalism for the first time. It made me realize that there was an audience for the things I was already doing, if I just wrote them down. Since then, I’ve developed a love of writing about the music I’m listening to. I find it helps me explore the things I love in ways I wouldn’t otherwise have, and forces me to learn to explain just why I love them so much. As I get more involved in the music industry otherwise (I’m currently co-president of a high school record label), I find that as much as I love the work that I do there, it sometimes makes me lose track of what I enjoy about music in the first place. Writing brings me back there, and that’s why I love it. I started this site to have an outlet for all the things I wanted to say about music. I hope you’ll enjoy some of my thoughts.
